You talking about your father during the messages Cooper was receiving from his kids was somber, dark, and enlightening. It is something enough people don't discuss in their lives and the fact you were able to discuss it in a video on YouTube shows amazing personal growth, but it also shows another thing. That is the amazing things films can do for us. It allows us to escape reality, to turn off our brains and enjoy the spectacle on screen, but to also look inward. To look into ourselves and connect with characters on deeper more emotional and personal levels. It's the magic of movies and your anecdote perfectly encapsulates that and it was moving. Thank you for sharing that with us Paul, I'm sure it wasn't easy.
The scene where he watches the videos from his kids always gets me
Duration of the breakdown = 1 hr 40 mins. 12 Earth years is roughly 1 hour 37 minutes in Miller's planet. Is this a coincidence?
I got to see Hans Zimmer in concert last year and he told a beautiful and intimate story about this film. I'll do my best here to repeat it from memory. He started by saying he's not much for socializing at parties so he tends to find a quiet corner and talk with a friend about movies and music. At one party he and Christopher Nolan (who he just calls Chris of course) were talking and Chris said to him "I've written this story, sort of a fable. I want to send it over to you. Read it, write something for it, and then give me a call." So a few days later a manuscript comes to Hans in the mail and he can tell that Chris wrote it himself on his typewriter. It was not long, only a few pages, but was a story about a father and a son. Hans sat down after reading it and spent the rest of the day creating and composing a piece of music for it. He called Chris and his wife answered. He told her he'd send the piece over to them but she said, no, Chris wants to hear it from you. So Chris drove over (they were both in LA) and sat down in Hans' studio and Hans played the music for him on the piano. And after he finished Chris said "I had the story. Now I have the heart of the story." And that story became Interstellar and the music became the theme music for it. Lovely story and two of the greatest artists of the modern day.
Perfect time to be wide awake at 3am
This is by far my favorite movie, super excited to finally see you cover it
I think it’s important to shoutout Jonathon Nolan! I believe he’s the real master of time in story form. Jonathon wrote the short story for Memento. He co wrote the Prestige! And he’s a writer on Interstellar.
7:38 my grandfather lived through the dust bowl and even as a kid in the 80s I remember him always setting his glasses and plates upside down until the food had been served. That man grew his own food in the middle of a neighborhood just in case. The dustbowl affected the rest of his life.. incredible that Nolan used that Doc to show in this film!
