Releasing five years after Prometheus it was a long time coming that felt afflicted by several factors. You can definitely feel the studios hand here and even Ridley Scott admitted he adjusted for feedback. I've seen this film described as being...almost an apology to Prometheus. There audiences expected a Xenomorph horror and we instead got a creationism study. Though I think the films goes into some great ideas, the general public didn't feel the same. Audiences often dont like being tricked and to save the franchise they went back to basics. Instead of titling this so it ties in with Prometheus, they tell you straight away that this is Alien. However, over its lengthy development, they went back and forth over what to do. Now if youve seen our breakdown of Proemtheus then youll know we discussed Paradise lost. Paradise was even the title of the movie at one point but Scott felt it gave too much away. However that theme continued whenever Scott was discussing. Covenants original title was Alien Paradise lost which he announced in 2015: "because if it is paradise, paradise cannot be what you think it is. Paradise has a connotation of being extremely sinister and ominous." Though this was changed quotes and nods towards the poem are still found in the movie.
