Description

I'm watching Your Name (2016) for the first time with Carly. I was a little nervous going into this one because anime has not totally clicked for me yet, and this movie had been requested so much that I was afraid I was going to be the person missing whatever everyone else sees. But this one got us. It was confusing in a way that made us want to keep up, beautiful the whole time, and by the end we were way more attached than expected. Also, we watched this with subtitles, but the YouTube edit is dubbed to make it easier for you guys to watch :) What other Anime movies should we watch? For those who don't read the descriptions: WE WATCHED THIS IN JAPENESE WITH SUBTITLES BUT CHOSE THE ENGLISH DUB FOR YOUTUBE. We thought it would be easier to follow a long with all the cuts and jumping around. <3

"Anime" has a bit of a tiered circular meaning and it can be a bit confusing to explain, but bottom line is that in English, the term "anime" is used to mean "Japanese cartoon/animation." Full meaning: "Anime," in Japanese, is short for "animēshon", which is a loanword from English, obviously derived from "animation." In Japanese, anything that is animated, cartoon or otherwise, is called anime. It's a common occurrence for Japanese to shorten words, especially when it comes to loanwords. For instance "sandwich" is "sandoicchi" in Japanese and is frequently shortened to "sando." In English, the word "anime" is loaned from the shortened Japanese word "anime," and is defined as any animation originating from Japan. So Japan borrowed "animation" and shortened it to "anime," then English borrowed back the shortened word "anime."

The reason they remembered despite their memories fading after they alter the timeline is due to Mitsuha's red ribbon: The Red Ribbon of Fate that in japanese and chinese culture says that to people attached to it are destined to be together no matter what.

anime is just a medium to tell stories, just like movies that can cater to many genre. sometimes it even works better as a suspension of reality to convey a story.

Fun fact: the reason that the messages disappeared but the "I love You" did not is because in Japanese folklore, all messages of love are protected by the moon god.

I've seen a lot of people react to this movie and a lot of them seem confused at the end at the part where the main characters are at the stairs and don't say anything to each other as they walk by. This is because at this point, they pretty much have lost all memories of eachother. They're basically starting over as strangers.

I cry every time Mitsuha opens her hand to see Taki’s name, only to see “I love you”.

You’ve watched so many movies that I’ve never even heard of. Thanks for removing me from my cinematic bubble
