(5:50) The 1984 classics one of the best christmas films ever made and I thought we'd revisit it in time for the Holiday. Throughout this video we're gonna breakdown the movie and talk about all of the hidden details in it. Firstly though just a quick word from our sponsors and then we'll get into the movie. - Ok so during the 80s we saw a rise in humorous horrors. Ghostbusters released the same weekend in some territories Gremlins helped to continue the trend. Bringing together elements that were typical in horror films it also added in jokes to the scares. Written by Chris Columbus and directed by Joe Dante this was produced under Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment. He'd of course been a big part of Poltegeist which too mixed a tone of Horror with some comedy. Emphasis on some there...cos that Clown Scene. Nightmares for years. It definitely has his signature style to it though with there being a feeling of magic to the film. Based upon the idea of Gremlins they'd become a folklore tale amongst pilots. During the 1920s it was commonplace to joke that mechanical failures in planes were due to little monsters in the machinery. you gotta watch out for gremlins in the machinery...same gremlins brought down our big ones...World War 2 (33:38) This was something RAF Pilot and Childrens Book Author Roald Dahl picked up on and it's a concept that stayed within his mind. Disney then comissioned him to write a book that would then be turned into an animated short. Though we never got that we did get the book releasing in 1943. After the war several people had the same idea as and lots of them found jobs in the emerging film industry. Though they didnt have a standalone project though they did appear as creatures in others. Bugs Bunny The Falling Hare, The Twilight Zone...these all featured they own sort of Gremlins and it was something that remained in the Zeitgeist. they put em in your tv...got tiny little gremlins in your watches (34:09) We even have a moment in the movie where a Gremlin misses Kate and hits a photo of a B17 which was something said to be plagued by the creatures.
