As a health coach, this is something I have quietly observed over and over again with certain male clients who seriously struggle with their weight. When home feels emotionally unsafe, constant yelling, criticism, demands, disrespect, walking on eggshells, their nervous system becomes so chronically fried that the body almost seems to hold onto weight like armor or protection. You can see how deeply survival physiology affects everything, no matter how “perfect” the diet plan looks on paper. And honestly, your statement “Pick your stress” feels heartbreaking in these situations, because for many of them the alternative stress would mean divorce, losing their children daily, financial devastation, or watching their entire life collapse. It’s painful to witness how many people are carrying chronic relational stress in silence while blaming themselves for “lack of discipline” when their nervous system has been stuck in survival mode for years.
I accidentally triggered a metabolic/homonal syndrome by quitting bodybuilding cold-turkey to do exclusive cardio jogging/swimming. I’m still recovering, but it was a blessing in disguise. I discovered my insulin resistance that was masked for years and learned about the cortisol, insulin, and visceral fat death-spiral. Since returning to bodybuilding, walking, and controlling sugar intake and intermittent fasting, I’ve dropped 15 lbs in a month. Before, I was working out 2x a day and restricting every calorie and my weight kept ticking up. Timing your meals and choosing carbs from leafy vegetables has been a game changer.
I was stuck in a very toxic marriage for almost 20 years. After about 10 yrs I started gaining weight. It was so bad I had dozens of heart palpitations daily. I would even twitch and jerk in my sleep, often waking to a wife that would then immediately berate me for it. I've been divorced for about 18 months now. Even though it all but destroyed my relationship with my 2 children, cost me 3yrs of wages and was the hardest thing I've ever been through, I am in better shape than I have been since I was in my twenties, my heart palpitations completely stopped, and I sleep like a baby. I can honestly say from experience that there is nothing worse than being in love with someone who hates you.
Watching Thomas talk about Cortisol actually raises my Cortisol.
I F'd my metabolism this way. I'm addicted to not eating, AND I'm 50 lbs overweight. I've been doing this unintentionally for most of my life because the stress hormones made me feel focused and energized. I didn't realize this mechanism until very recently when I figured out I was a stress junkie and this helped my ADHD. I've been trying to make myself eat breakfast for 3 years and I fail every day. I can't eat before 3:00 p.m. I squeeze in one more meal, and end the day with too few calories because I'm trying to protect my sleep quality. I wish I had known about this in my teens or twenties. Low carb at least keeps my blood sugar under control, but sometimes I run hypoglycemic. It's a mess and it's a vicious cycle.
Loving 4x4 HIIT technique. I've noticed SUCH a huge difference in all aspects of health, hormones, VOC, body fat %, Energy levels, Brain fog. And the best part is, I only have to do it 1 or times a week. Thanks Thomas, this video totally backs up why it works so well.
This is the kind of info I started following Thomas for many years ago. I’ve almost stopped watching any of his content in recent months because he seems to only be pushing supplements. Actual lifestyle changes and real food consumption is what I want to see more of. Sure I understand needing to provide for his family by sponsoring products but it lease keep the hype at bay and stick to the practice daily habits that move the needle.
I can personally confirm your advice here is 100% spot-on, critically accurate reality.
I just watched this video and realized this is exactly what I’ve been doing. I’ve been pushing a little too hard with intermittent fasting, morning coffee, stress, lack of sleep, and on top of that, TRT. As you pointed out in the video, some people like me don’t really feel hungry at all, but I do feel the stress and reactivity from running too hard for too long. So I’m going to change a few things for a while: eat breakfast again, less aggressive fasting, coffee after food, more hydration, more sunlight, and better recovery. I already eat a pretty health-conscious diet with high protein and high-quality fats, so this is more about nervous system balance and recovery. I’m not quitting discipline — just making some adjustments. Thanks for the insightful video.
