Brain Fuel Crisis: Why Sugar Destroys Neurons and How Ketones Restore Mental Clarity

Discover why sugar legitimately destroys brain energy production and learn how ketones, exercise, and specific dietary shifts can reverse brain insulin resistance, leading to profound mental clarity and resilience.

Short Summary

  • Sugar spikes cause immediate oxidative stress and subsequent cellular energy crashes (brain fog).
  • Chronic high insulin leads to brain insulin resistance, effectively starving neurons even when blood glucose is sufficient.
  • Ketones provide an essential, insulin-independent fuel source, immediately bypassing this metabolic blockade.
  • Exercise improves memory and connectivity (BDNF), a process significantly driven by ketone production during activity.

This discussion with Dr. Matt Bernstein details the mechanisms by which dietary glucose volatility impairs neurological function, linking poor energy metabolism directly to conditions like anxiety and depression. Utilizing concepts like MCT oil supplementation, time-restricted eating, and the adoption of a ketogenic lifestyle offers powerful, actionable paths to restore neuronal function and achieve long-term mental health benefits.

this is entirely anecdotal non-human science information, but we have two cats, both 7-9 years old, both with constant skin and allergy problems for most of their lives. We recently changed their food from science diet, a vet recommended, not cheap food that is constantly pushed as being high quality. to a high protein, all natural food, and in two weeks all their skin, fur and allergy problems have disappeared. I’m not talking about it being less or decreased. I’m talking they’re gone completely. Just petting the cats their skin and fur feels different and their personalities have completely changed just in two weeks. It’s almost like they’re showing us how much better they feel. Extrapolate that anecdotal information to all of the shit that we humans constantly pump into our bodies. Food as medicine is not a concept. It is an empirical fact. The plan is simple and you don’t need a bunch of specialized influencer pushed diets to see the results.. eat real food, avoid processed stuff and especially avoid processed sugars, and your health will improve.

Sugar is the hardest addiction to kick, but you can do it. It took me about 2 weeks to get over my sugar cravings, but after that I don’t even think about it, but it’s still like being an alcoholic-have one donut and the cravings come right back and then you have to start over, so be steadfast

Sleep Optimization • Maintain regular sleep pattern of at least 7 hours per night • Prioritize sleep quality over quantity • Address sleep disorders (apnea, insomnia) if present • Sleep profoundly impacts brain health through neurobiological processes that affect mood, energy, and cognitive fitness

I can attest that I see a difference in like 4 days of making diet, exercise, sleep, changes. On a numbers scale it may seem small. But to someone who has had low energy due to daily brain fog, the “small” change in a positive, more energetic direction is HUGE.

A small amount of sugar may cause a glucose spike but blood glucose over a long period after will track lower. Wearing a glucose monitor can help you pick & choose foods that have less glucose spike or long term raised glucose levels. I now avoid white rice, oatmeal & popcorn.

Don’t eat carbs by themselves, stop eating after dinner, have dinner 5-6 hours before you go to bed.

I cannot imagine not eating low carb, and for me personally, utilizing a narrow 2 hour eating window late afternoon, with only whole foods. It's like a 1-2 punch. My brain is razor sharp all day, making both work and exercise easier and more effective, not to mention enjoyable. Carbs I do eat on occasion include Russian buckwheat kasha (thanks Thomas!). Throw in some daily saffron, tyrosine and creatine and that results in a nice, constant natural buzz. I also take the usual suspects regarding supplements. My 68 year old brain is pretty damn happy.

I cut out sugar and the high GI carbs 5 months ago and feel great. Highly recommend cutting the sugar, took me 5 months to not miss the brownies/cookies but now have no desire to eat them.

My experience with MCT oil is a little different. I was on Keto and added in MCT about two months into my diet. I did not notice any cognitive changes (I have severe brain fog) the entire time it took me to consume the MCT however, when I ran out of MCT and decided to not continue use, that’s when I could notice that in fact, the MCT oil was indeed working. I felt horrible not being on MCT and could not wait for my next order to arrive. I take 1 tablespoon a day religiously and I am confident it has helped me think clearer. Won’t give it up again 😂
