These Doctors Were Wrong About Fasting... and Why I Strongly Disagree
Reframing Fasting: Maintaining Muscle Mass Despite Expert Skepticism
Discover why prominent health figures are reconsidering regular fasting protocols and learn the precise training and nutritional adjustments necessary to successfully preserve lean muscle mass while continuing your fasting regimen.
Short Summary
- Decouple fasting from forced immediate protein consumption post-workout using modern protein synthesis data.
- Prioritize resistance training over fasted cardio to optimize fat oxidation signaling and guard muscle tissue.
- Understand the distinction between risks associated with extended fasts versus shorter, strategic fasting windows.
This discussion addresses the recent shift in opinion from experts like Dr. Peter Attia and Dr. Rhonda Patrick regarding metabolic stability and muscle loss during fasting. The core goal is to provide actionable countermeasures, rooted in current research, to mitigate these risks.

I feel significantly better when I fast regularly.
Still fasting, 8 years in and it feels great!
I still fast. I feel better after a fast.
Fasting saved my life. I was once diabetic and am now cured. Sore joints. Lethargy. Brain fog. All are gone! Im down 55 pounds and sleep like a baby. My wife is shocked that I no longer snore. I do high intensity intermittent training by speed walking and / or hill climbing. Im careful to get enough protein and do resistance training twice a week. I went hunting with my son a couple weeks ago and we were both amazed that I never got tired climbing through rough terrain for many hours. Since I was significantly fat, I feel like my body was burning mostly fat. Since I had upwards of 200,000 calories of subcutaneous and visceral fat on my body, I don't think my body is stupid enough to burn excessive muscle. It doesn't make sense. After my last 7 day fast, I decided to only do it twice a year at most because of the strees it has on my body. But, I am a true believer in fasting.
I’ve done a 3 day fast, felt amazing and helped to get my blood sugar levels under control! I do IF every day!!
14 hour daily fasting saved my life!
Thank you for this! Peter and Rhonda don’t need to fast: they are very fit and active, eat super healthy, they can afford to be lazy towards fasting. But an average person doesn’t live like them. A regular person struggles with weight, staying active and eating healthy. I fast for fat loss and autophagy.

As a female in her 40s in the military, I found conventional wisdom stacks the weight on. I do best following keto OMAD, and exercise fasted. I seek to stay skinny strong, going to try this advice, try a couple of 36 hour fasts on resistance training days.
I put together a meal plan for insulin resistance using Whole Foods, here it is for free: http://www.thomasdelauer.com/eatrealfood - The best way to adhere to something is just have a plan. This is a thank you for joining my newsletter and subscribing
