While grip strength is a famous marker of all-cause mortality, Brad Schoenfeld argues that Power—the ability to produce force rapidly—is the true foundation of physical independence. In this clip, Brad explains why the "Power" factor is what actually prevents life-threatening falls and hip fractures in the 65+ population. We dive into the science of sarcopenia, which Brad defines not just as muscle loss, but as a decline in functional capacity. He shares a remarkable study on 90-year-old nursing home patients who achieved a 150% strength gain in just 8 weeks, with many regaining the ability to walk unassisted. Whether it’s lifting weights, using machines, or performing bodyweight movements, Brad outlines the "minimal effective dose" required to undo years of muscle detriment and reclaim your physical freedom. Added speed & power sessions to my routine a year ago and it's great. I do speed sets of Squat, benchpress, DL and OHP at 55% of my 1Rm, focus being on explosive movement. In combination with strength and volume this is good.
