I’m amazed at the fact that you opened up about the ups and downs of your relationship here and so honestly discussed it without hesitation. That is admirable.
Sawyer, you need a podcast!! there are so many things happening in this conversation that most people probably aren't picking up on, I would love to hear more about what you have to say!!
I have suffered from anxious attachment since birth. I am now 52 years old and thanks to Mel Robbins and the Let Them Theory, I can say I feel healed. It’s created a sense of peace that I can not explain .
Sadly, I think Mel is not very good at owning her shit. I applaud Sawyer for speaking up but there's always a sense that Mel is saying sorry, BUT...I so wish she had said to her mother, "stop minimizing not being there for me & using the same old tired excuses" that she was tasked with the responsibility of SAVING the family from bankruptcy, etc. Families do it everyday and they have to make hard choices and compromises that allow them to spend precious moments with their families where they can. It seems Mel didn't do a good job with that & when she was home, she made it about herself. Interestingly enough, Sawyer's name was finally added to the LET THEM book 3 months after the initial publication. I suspect MEL was pressured into it even though she continued to mention that it was a collaborative effort yet her daughter's name was glaringly absent from the front cover. That's pretty shameful! Practice what you preach Mel, fully own your nonsense and get on with it!
Please, please do an episode about estrangement from adult children to parents. So important.
At 14:56 a respectfully want to stop Sawyer and say you are minimizing your feelings and experience about feeling abandoned or overlooked by your mother and your need for her love and attention, that is a core need of children and I don’t like to see you saying “I had this story in my head “, it makes it sound like yougaslighting yourself. Does that make sense?
Wow! Sawyer's honesty was so raw and profound and articulated in such a mindful and mature way. Kuddos to both of you for being so honest from the heart to demonstrate to all of us that communication is so important in our relationships to make for a solid and loving relationship.
Love your family being so available to each other and sharing with us, the listeners.
I feel bad for the daughter. Mel is dominating and manipulative. I wish the best for the daughter. I hope she feels happy and heals.
Mel: "Anger & resentment can become a substitute for the love that you actually crave." Whoa!!! This.
