I lost my 17 year old son to fentanyl. I did all the things, said all the things. Hearing him say that there is NOTHING you can say until they are ready to hear it…took some of the guilt off of my heart.
Why only 40's or 50's Mel...for many reasons I developed a new business/ career at 72 and I'm loving who I am now!!!
I'm single divorced woman at 54..I've changed careers 3 times in my life ..now going into my 4th ..I've enrolled in RN school and I believe you are NEVER too old...I've learned you don't have to tell anyone your dreams because even family can be critical.. LET THEM!!!!

Mel, Mel, Mel. This episode. I am a black woman while listening to this conversation the tears started to form in my eyes... The exact words from his mouth has been playing in my heart... feeling so stuck. Thank you Mel Thank you Rich for sharing in such sn authentic way Grace and peace ❤🙏🏿
A 30-year-old lost guy here. 👋 I hope everyone who’s going through a tough time finds their way soon. There is a light waiting at the end of the tunnel.
36 year old male here — had my last drink 2 days ago because I feel I’ve hit rock bottom. For the past 2 years I’ve slowly sunk into this place of isolation & loneliness. The past 6 months (actively drinking) have been complete hell & just stuck in anxiety & survival mode. barely hanging on to hope. These podcasts SAVE LIVES because I truly think I wouldn’t have the strength to continue on anymore. It’s only up from here because there is no more bottom. THANK YOU Mel, for having these extraordinary guests on your show. And giving them a platform to share their brilliant experiences and knowledge on how to become the best version of yourself — you are truly a positive force we need in this world. Thank you :)
I'm 53. I was one of those "gifted kids". Tested high when young, excelled academically, did well in sports (competitive swimmer like Rich, I looked like him at that age except I hated swimming with a passion), musical (which I loved). 17:53 that was my routine in my teens! Dropped out 2nd year uni. Went wild, stayed wild. Similar story to Rich. I took to drink and it was instantly my best companion. I took it so much further. I was a heroin addict for years. That's a long story. Ended up half-blind (I've lost vision in my right, left is going as well), heart failing, bad teeth, no money, no family, no friends, in debt, and a few bucks away from the street at any given moment. I'm not using anymore. But wtf do I do with that mess? How do you recover mentally from all that? When he says "there is hope" I simply don't believe him. At all. Sometimes it is too late. Here's what you can say to someone caught in the grip of an addiction: "If you decide you want to change and want to reach out, I'll be here for you" Leave the door open. Nobody ever did that for me.
