Recognizing the 10 Early Warning Signs of Chronic Heart Failure

Act now before your heart gives out by learning the subtle warning signals often dismissed as normal aging, as heart failure silently weakens the heart until advanced stages.

Short Summary

  • Identify Risk: Recognize 10 distinct symptoms (from breathlessness to leg swelling) indicating potential heart muscle weakening.
  • Understand Progression: Differentiate chronic heart failure (a slow inefficiency) from acute heart attacks (sudden muscle death).
  • Intervene Early: Learn the primary lifestyle drivers of heart failure—like insulin resistance—to proactively protect cardiac function.

This discussion breaks down the mechanics of heart failure, detailing how left-sided versus right-sided failure affects fluid buildup, leading to specific symptoms like shortness of breath (Sign 1) and leg edema (Sign 6). Since heart failure is not a single disease but an end result of multiple issues, the speaker emphasizes immediate, holistic lifestyle actions covering nutrition, movement, and emotional well-being to prevent further progression.

People dont ignore them, but when they go to their doctor they treat them as a hypocondriac and say there is nothing to worry about. So they go home and it continues and now the patient thinks its nothing because the doctor told me its nothing and now they feel embrassed to go back.

I would be a poster child for this video. Everything Dr. Ekberg mentioned, I've lived though. At 64 yrs I had bicuspid (mitral) valve failure, it became partially detached. One normal night after dinner with friends after work I was lying in bed and boom. Lungs filled up, couldn't breath, violently coughed frothy moisture and I thought it was over. I had just enough oxygen to get help and an ambulance ride. Next day major heart surgery. They reattached the valve's cords to the heart walls. 2 weeks in ICU and 3 days in regular bed. The recovery was brutal. Having said that I was never overweight, never needed a doctor (so I thought), didn't detect any signs. The only hint was that for my CDL driving physical the doc said I had a murmur a few years prior. All I can conclude is get regular check ups and if a doc says you have a murmur, go get an electrocardiogram, and an echocardiogram. The former can be done by any doctor, and the latter requires a specialist. Both painless and easy to go through. Well worth every cent. I could have avoided the whole ordeal. Conclusion for me is that when I was barely able to do laps around the ICU with an oxygen tank cart and nurse following me around, I made a solemn vow to myself that I will succeed, overcome, and get in great physical shape and have my cardiologists sign me off of all medications. Well that took two years to get off medications including apixaban aka Eliquis which was the hardest one for him to release me from...but I won through stubborn determination, many exams and moving moving moving. Walking in large circles around a track. one lap then a month later two laps then several until I made myself walk up hills in small increments and now I walk (with purpose as if late for an appointment) up and down a hill of 2 miles every day or every other day. It's been 6 years now and free at last, no medications, and I try to eat as healthy AP. Most importantly which saved my life and extended quality of life is the walking out of doors. Nothing else could have helped me more than to walk walk walk like Forrest Gump went to running. Hope this helps someone. Thank you Dr. Ekberg, this was a gem of a presentation.

Please take everything Dr. Ekberg said seriously - I had EVERY ONE of these symptoms - (male age 60 nonsmoker non drinker) passed out on the kitchen floor January 2, 2025 - was in the hospital for over a week and they found out I had an irregular heartbeat, and I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure (CHF), but they said I was too sick to be operated on and would probably die on the OR table - they postponed the surgery for a month and I had an ablation in February 2025. Now, I feel like I’m 16 again. I cannot believe how sick I was. Seriously sick! When I see pictures of me then compared to now, it’s like daylight and dark. Please, if you have ANY OR ALL of these symptoms go to your doctor, cardiologist, pulmonologist and/or the ER NOW! This is NOTHING to play around with. Thank god for health insurance because the hospital stays and the ablation surgery was almost $500,000! Thankfully insurance covered all but my $500 deductible because I was admitted via the ER and had an ambulance ride. Do this for yourself and your family!

💡 I learned the hard way that stopping all activity after retirement was a mistake. At 59, I struggled with high blood pressure and edema, but once I started exercising and eating better, everything changed — 50 pounds lost, normal blood pressure, and no more swelling. 🙌 This video is a reminder that it’s never too late to take control of your health. Keep moving, keep fighting! 💪✨
