Whoever said Brad Pitt isn't likeable in 12 Monkeys is more out of their mind than Brad Pitt is in this role.
I'm sorry, but I don't think there's any question that the past never changed in 12 Monkeys. The virus was released at the end of the movie the same as at the beginning, but they did get a clean sample back to the future to develop an antidote. There's also no boot-strap problem in 12 Monkeys. He never gave anybody any ideas about the virus. Brad's character always had the same plan, to release the animals from the zoo and always did that. He never had anything to do with the virus. That was always the same guy and he never interacted with Bruce's character directly.
Bravo Cassie! That was some champion observation. This is one of my favorite movies, which I've rewatched countless times since 1996, and I've yet to come across anyone who grasped so much of it on the first viewing. You pretty much nailed the key point in one sentence: you can't wrap your head around it because time travel isn't real. And lots of people have a hard time accepting the tragic ending, where the inevitable can't be changed. Like James said to Jose in the airport, "it was never about stopping the virus." Unlike most time travel stories, there are no branching timelines or paradoxes here. What happened must have happened, or as the tagline puts it, "The Future is History." The scientist "Jones" was sent back to collect a sample so that a cure could be developed, allowing the future world to begin rebuilding. It's tragic, but at least there's hope for the future. The movie never changes. We just remember it differently because WE are different. p.s. "Condesmiling" is Shakespearean level coinage! I'm going to try to remember that one. Remember you heard it here first, folks.
This is the only movie I ever watched, exited, then immediately bought a ticket for the next showing. A top 50 movie of all time, in my opinion.
35:41 When Cassie was like, "Oh my gosh, I'm gonna have to read so many reddit forums to figure this out after!" ๐๐
You canโt change the past in this one. Scientist only came back to get samples, so James really was a hero and saved the future
9:35 He has no social skills. He's like a small child. He's in a state of arrested development thanks to the world ending when he was young.
This is one of the few time travel movies to deal with determinism.
This movie gave me depression for a lifetime. Great movie.
