Description

On this episode of Legal AF, Ray Brescia speaks to Robert M. Ceresa, an Associate Professor of Political Science and the Founding Director of the Politics Lab at the James L. Farmer House at Huston-Tillotson University, a historically black college.  Ceresa is an expert on grassroots movements and has written a powerful piece in the Texas Observer discussing the ways in which the civil rights movement of the 20th century helped bring about the Voting Rights Act, and that it’s going to take a movement to restore those rights, not just litigation through the courts. Ceresa is also an expert on the Cuban Diaspora and the author of the 2018 book published by Palgrave Macmillan: Cuban American Political Culture and Civic Organizing: Tocqueville in Miami. Brescia and Ceresa talk about recent developments in Cuba and how to rebuild civic infrastructure there and in the U.S. The Response We Really Need to the Supreme Court’s Gutting of the VRA: https://www.texasobserver.org/supreme-court-vra-decision-civic-infrastructure/ Cuban American Political Culture and Civic Organizing: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-319-56285-8 Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/@LegalAFMTN?sub_confirmation=1 Become a member of Legal AF YouTube community: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJgZJZZbnLFPr5GJdCuIwpA/join Become a member of the Legal AF Substack: https://michaelpopok.substack.com/20off Follow Legal AF on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/legalafmtn.bsky.social Follow Michael Popok on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/mspopok.bsky.social Subscribe to the Legal AF podcast feed here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/legal-af-by-meidastouch/id1580828595 Subscribe to the Intersection with Michael Popok podcast feed here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-intersection-with-michael-popok/id1818863274 Subscribe to Unprecedented with Michael Popok and Dina Doll podcast feed here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/unprecedented-by-legal-af/id1867023089 Subscribe to Court of History with Sidney Blumenthal and Sean Wilentz podcast feed here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-court-of-history/id1867022920

The Supreme Court is the Hub of the Chaos that is taking place in America. I have been stating this sentiment for the last 6 years. This Chaos by the Supreme Court was on Purpose. We need to find a method to Impeach these unethical justices. They are too comfortable with their decisions.

Professor Ceresa's recent op-ed is an important read. It puts into historical context what we are experiencing now, and the kinds of grassroots organizing and mobilizing across diverse communities and groups that are needed to counteract right-wing attacks on all of our civil rights and liberties. 👍

The Court does not care what we think. They have lifetime appointments. They have proven immune to reasoned amici from hundreds of lawyers regarding their rulings in direct opposition to the plain text of the Constitution. They have been immune to protests by thousands of people for Dobbs and other rulings. The voters may flip the House in the midterms, but without a substantial majority in both chambers, Court reform is going nowhere. And there is zero chance of conviction in an impeachment for Justices or Trump
