I hate to sound like a downer but last op did that couple and the potential child a favor. If the actual, honest reality of something is all it takes to discourage you, you aren't ready. Whether it's adopting a shelter pet or an actual child, too many people do it based on an idealized fantasy. The youtube short fluff pieces about rescue dogs with the cheesy "I thought i was saving him but really, he saved me!". Your tv/ movie orphans like Annie, precocious, sweet little charmers that just make your life better. As a result, when reality hits them in the face that it's hard work, that trauma could be involved or medical issues, that it could take A LOT of time and effort to start building a bond... They return the pet or child like an Amazon package, they wanted the fantasy, the perfect ideal, they weren't ready for a project. This is why I hate fluff pieces and inspiration porn, too many either don't understand that it's the exception, not the rule... Or don't question whether or not it's fake for reddit karma or YouTube views. Op was being responsible, these people were not ready for a potentially difficult child.

Not gonna lie, I think I enjoy hearing the little snippets about your in-laws and time in China as much as the stories. Thanks for keeping my mornings interesting!

Adoption story: As someone who works in child welfare, the number of kids on my case load who are back in the system after Adoption because the parents were not prepared, or didn't listen to the warnings about it not being the idealized fantasy they have in their heads, is appalling. Adoption is hard. Adoption from foster care is harder. Those kids go through trauma, and you don't always know what is going to trigger it or how it will present itself. On top of that, the system does the best it can with what it has, but it's not a perfect system, and the process can drag out for an obnoxious amount of time.
