I megadosed vitamin c per Paulings regimen. I ended up with a food sensitivity to vitamin C.
I recall 5+ years ago learning about an ICU doc, in New Zealand I believe, who used IV calcium ascorbate, along with some steroids I believe, for sepsis patients, and he reduced mortality by 50%. Another ICU doc in Florida was doing the same protocol, also with outstanding results. There were some YouTube videos about this vitamin C protocol with sepsis at the time that are probably worth checking out. It sharply contradicts the sepsis trial you mentioned. Makes me wonder what funding was behind the sepsis trial. But I also wonder what the dosing was with the doctor's using it, which might have been much lower, and if the added steroids had anything to do with the results.
That's an absurdly high dose of Vitamin C. It would be nice to see another trial with 10% of that dose.
My own understanding of Vitamin C is that peak blood plasma levels are reached at ~500mg and metabolized in a 3-4 hour period. Calcium absorbs oxalates, which some literature indicates Calcium has a synergistic combination with D3, K2, and Magnesium. Instead of megadosing individual nutrients, I think it's important we get at an understanding of both optimal doses and the cofactors involved with their enzymatic activity. I wonder how the treatment of the burn victims would have differed if the subjects had received Calcium, D3, K2, Magnesium, and the full spectrum of B vitamins which we already kniw are necessary for cellular metabolism. I admire trying to isolate specific effects but I don't believe monotherapies are the solution, these processes seem more like a construction job. You can't just add more hammers or add more nails or add more concrete, there's a balance to strike.
In the same way, they tested the cholesterol level in eggs in the 1950's to 1970's, and determined it raised circulating cholesterol by a huge margin, hence he advice if no more than 3 eggs per week. Problem was - they used powdered eggs, which was oxidising the fatty acids in the egg yolks. Its oxidised cholesterol that drives foam cell activity and atherosclerosis.
what was the exact chemical composition of the vitamin C used in this study? calcium ascorbate? ascorbic acid? full vitamin C complex?

What I really hate about these studies is that it is actually much more complicated and complex than what is stated in these studies. Plus, specific context does matter in protocols and outcomes. For example, most vitamin E studies, not only are using massive dosages, but also are likely using only the one compound Alpha tocopherol, and not the other 7 vitamin E compounds found in nature (they do different roles in body). Vitamin C is actually multiple ascorbic acid compounds in nature, most experiments don't use a mix, no synergistic citrus polyphenols (think batman and robin). We are still barbarians with medicine, just a different hack saw....

Our loss of endogenous vitamin C production is not an evolutionary advantage but a disadvantage, although if you consider all the other species that can produce it (everything except guinea pigs) they're doing it at lower steady doses throughout the day.
