Tracking the Evidence Behind Lowering Blood Pressure Targets

Discover how decades of research, from insurance actuarial tables to major clinical trials, have continuously driven blood pressure targets lower. Learn why the current aggressive goals are supported by evidence, not just profit motives.

Short Summary

  • Medical guidelines reflect a mounting body of evidence, including the SPRINT trial, showing significant mortality reduction with aggressive blood pressure control (below 120 systolic).
  • The historical lowering of thresholds from 180/110 (1848) to the current consensus results from cumulative observational and randomized controlled trial data.
  • Counter claims suggesting industry conspiracy are refuted by the continuous trend toward lower, evidence-based targets that started decades before mass medication use.

This overview traces the evolution of blood pressure definitions, examining key historical moments like the Framingham Study and major trials, to explain why medical standards now advocate for historically low targets to maximize long-term health and minimize preventable death.

Medical science has become so advanced that there are hardly any healthy people left.

I am speaking for myself and several friends I've talked to about this. We are all over 70, and if we get our blood pressure anywhere near as low as they say it should be now, we are too dizzy and weak to walk across the house, let alone think properly. I have exercised all my life and eaten a very healthy diet but high blood pressure runs in my family on both sides. I cannot function with a systolic pressure below 130 and am on 3 drugs but still cannot keep it down there. We are all afraid of falling and breaking our hips from blood pressure that is too low for us to balance properly while walking. That kind of break can cause us to be bedridden for the rest of a very shortened lifetime. We wonder most of all just exactly who is paying for this research??? We've learned the hard way not to trust the science anymore unless we can find out who benefits from it.

Part of the reason people are so suspicious of the medical system is not "misinformation," as some would have us believe. It's because we now have so many examples of "the science" conveniently and enthusiastically corralling us into expensive profit-generating schemes from Big Pharma. I'm exhausted from years and years of trying to separate the truth from the marketing.

From 152/102 to 110/58 in 5 months with lifestyle changes that made me lose 48 pounds. Two doctors told me the solution was medication. My other health issues also went away that they said were "age related". Doctor said if I lost weight at 57 years old, I would have skin hanging everywhere on me. No loose skin. Then I was told that my diet would kill me, and I should go back to the diet that was killing me. In spite of my blood work now being perfect on a low carb diet. I have zero faith in the medical profession at this point as anything other than sales people for big pharma.

If your blood pressure is zero, there's no risk of cardiac issues.

I track my BP in MS Excel (many years of data) and I recently discovered that my BP in the summer is much lower than my BP during the colder months.
