Description

My guest is Dr. Staci Whitman, DMD, a board-certified dentist for kids and adults. We discuss the critical importance of oral care and the oral microbiome for brain and bodily health. We examine the negative effects of common oral care product ingredients such as alcohol, astringents, and bleaches. We also explore the history and real impact of fluoridated drinking water on oral, bone, and systemic health. Then we discuss healthy, lesser-known solutions for bad breath, canker sores, cavities, and teeth whitening. We cover how teeth can be made to repair their own cavities and the connection between oral health and cardiovascular health, male and female fertility, dementia, and cancer. This episode goes far beyond the best approaches to brushing and flossing and will be a valuable resource for anyone seeking to improve their oral health and appearance at any age. Crazy how much I changed after I started questioning everything about health. Reading Rethinking Health Secrets made me realize how much we’re NOT told.

Periodontist here. I read a lot of the literature and history on fluoride. I came to the same conclusion as you: They dont have studies showing its safety especially after other studies have come out showing risk of negative effects with IQ at higher levels. The earliest studies showing it reduces decay was during a time when there was no fluoride in our toothpaste and food like you said. Great synopsis on you part.

Summary (with chapter timestamps): To improve oral health and overall well-being, focus on a clean diet, nasal breathing, and avoiding harsh mouthwashes, while also considering the benefits of hydroxyapatite toothpaste and the potential risks of fluoride. 0:00 🦷 Introduction to Oral Health and Dr. Whitman • 🦷 Dr. Whitman, a functional dentist, discusses oral health's impact on overall health, including brain longevity and heart health. • 🦷 The video addresses common misconceptions about oral care and provides science-backed methods for improving oral hygiene and the oral microbiome. • 🦷 The conversation covers topics such as tooth remineralization, the effects of fluoride, and the importance of diet and lifestyle in maintaining oral health. 2:40 🦷 Harmful Practices and the Oral Microbiome • 🦷 Over-the-counter toothpastes often contain ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and strong essential oils that can damage the oral microbiome. • 🦷 Canker sores can be caused by trauma, viral infections, or issues in the gut, reflecting broader health problems. • 🦷 The mouth acts as a gateway to the body, and oral health is interconnected with gut health, affecting conditions like Crohn's and Celiac disease. 11:39 🦷 Tooth Remineralization and Fluoride • 🦷 Teeth naturally remineralize, but constant snacking and grazing prevent this process, leading to constant acidity and demineralization. • 🦷 Fluoride converts hydroxyapatite to fluorapatite, making teeth more acid-resistant, but it's not a substitute for a healthy diet. • 🦷 The best time for teeth to repair themselves is during sleep, when the mouth is not exposed to food or drink, allowing saliva to remineralize teeth. 19:14 🦷 Diet, Sugar, and the Oral Microbiome • 🦷 Sugar and flour feed bacteria in the mouth, leading to acid production and cavities; it's the acid that directly causes cavities. • 🦷 A clean diet, including high-quality protein, vegetables, fruits, and fermented foods, is crucial for oral microbiome health. • 🦷 A healthy diet can lead to whiter teeth, as well as improved overall health, by supporting the oral microbiome. 25:57 🦷 Diet and Teeth Whitening • 🦷 A clean diet, including high-quality protein, vegetables, fruits, and fermented foods, is crucial for oral microbiome health. • 🦷 A healthy diet can lead to whiter teeth, as well as improved overall health, by supporting the oral microbiome. • 🦷 Baby teeth are less mineralized and have a more haphazard crystalline structure, which is why they appear whiter and are more prone to decay. 32:45 🦷 Aging, Antibiotics, and the Oral Microbiome • 🦷 The loss of salivary capabilities and mouth breathing can lead to darker teeth as people age. • 🦷 Tetracycline, a type of antibiotic, can darken teeth. • 🦷 The mouth is the beginning of the digestive system, so repopulating the oral microbiome after antibiotics is important. 36:21 🦷 Mouthwashes and Oral Health • 🦷 Mouthwashes containing alcohol and strong antimicrobials can damage nitrate-reducing bacteria, which are essential for cardiovascular health. • 🦷 Chronic bad breath (halitosis) can indicate underlying issues like periodontal disease or infections. • 🦷 The habitual use of strong essential oils and mints can be damaging to oral health. 42:21 🦷 The Importance of Saliva • 🦷 Saliva contains bacteria, viruses, hormones, enzymes, immune cells, and minerals, all crucial for oral health. • 🦷 Hydration, mineral intake, and proper breathing are essential for maintaining healthy saliva. • 🦷 Salivary analysis can assess the types and ratios of bacteria, fungus, and viruses in the mouth, helping to identify potential health issues. 49:44 👃 Nasal Breathing vs. Mouth Breathing • 🦷 Humans are obligate nasal breathers, and mouth breathing can lead to various health issues. • 🦷 The shrinking of the face and jaws due to modern diets and lifestyles contributes to mouth breathing. • 🦷 Nasal breathing improves oxygenation and cognitive function, and is crucial for brain development in children. 1:06:26 🍬 Gum, Chewing, and Oral Health • 🦷 Xylitol gum can inhibit bacterial proliferation and reduce the risk of cavities. • 🦷 Mastic gum can lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction if overused. • 🦷 Chewing food is beneficial for facial development and overall oral health. 1:13:17 🦠 Oral Microbiome and Systemic Diseases • 🦷 Oral pathogens can translocate to the brain, heart, and other tissues, increasing the risk of diseases like Alzheimer's and cardiovascular disease. • 🦷 Gum disease affects a large portion of the population and is linked to various systemic diseases. • 🦷 The red complex bacteria (P. gingivalis, F. nucleatum, T. denticola, A. actinomycetemcomitans, and S. mutans) are major contributors to gum disease and systemic issues. 1:27:21 🪥 Mechanical Practices for Oral Health • 🦷 To improve oral health, brush at night, floss at night, and consider a water pick. • 🦷 The best brushing technique involves gentle, circular movements; wait 20-30 minutes after eating before brushing. • 🦷 The best dentistry is preventative dentistry, so focus on diet and lifestyle. 1:39:39 💧 Fluoride and Water Fluoridation • 💧 The rationale for water fluoridation is to reduce tooth decay, but it's not addressing the root cause of dental decay, which is diet. • 💧 The judge ruled that the EPA needs to regulate water fluoridation better due to the correlation between increased fluoride consumption and IQ issues in children. • 💧 Water fluoridation is a controversial practice, with many countries not fluoridating their water, and there's a need to address its potential risks. 2:05:06 🤰 Oral Health, Fertility, and Hormones • 🤰 Oral health impacts fertility, pregnancy, and hormones. • 🤰 Women with gum disease may take longer to conceive, and oral bacteria can affect egg quality and increase the risk of miscarriages and preterm births. • 🤰 During pregnancy, hormonal changes can increase the risk of pregnancy gingivitis. 2:24:10 💄 Lip Products and Oral Health • 💄 Lipsticks and lip balms can contain ingredients that are not safe for the oral microbiome. • 💄 Petroleum-based products can cause more dryness and lead to addiction. • 💄 The mouth is a window into the body, and nutritional deficiencies can manifest in the mouth. 2:39:11 😔 Mental Health and Dentistry • 😔 Dentists experience high rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide due to the challenges of the profession. • 😔 The profession involves high student debt, business management responsibilities, and the pressures of being a clinician. • 😔 It's important to be kind to dentists and to seek a different dentist if the relationship isn't working. ** Generated using ✨ VidSkipper AI Chrome Plugin

I’d like to throw my support behind hydroxyapatite toothpaste. My daughter always had rough dental checkups - they told me she just inherited the perfect storm of her dad’s thin enamel and my deep grooves. Switched to Boka nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste and at her last check-up the dentist said her teeth look great. I almost fell over. Never ever has that happened at her check-ups. The teeth they had put a “watch” on were completely healed.

I’ve had amazing results from coconut oil pulling and oregano oil swishing. My dentists were shocked at how most of my cavities had shrunk, and then they weren’t pleased when I told them what I’ve been doing. They then started to downplay my holistic methods. That’s okay, I know the truth 🙏🏼😊

I am so grateful for this episode! I am incredibly sick of "know-it-all" dentists who have this contrived and arrogant attitude towards oral health. The oral microbiome is our FRIEND! Wonderful stuff!!
