Mastering Neuroplasticity: Focus, Friction, and Novel Interventions

Learn the four critical components required to induce neuroplasticity at any age and explore cutting-edge tools, like Vagus Nerve Stimulation, that precisely optimize brain rewiring.

Short Summary

  • Adult brains demonstrate massive plasticity potential when specific neuromodulator release is precisely triggered.
  • Effective learning mandates a combination of alertness, effortful friction, dedicated rest, and post-event reflection.
  • Passive digital consumption offers significantly less adaptive benefit compared to interacting with the complex statistics of the natural world.
  • Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) provides a device-based hack to release the necessary chemical cocktail, significantly accelerating recovery from conditions like stroke and PTSD.

This discussion with Dr. Michael Kilgard provides an actionable framework for understanding the requirements for brain change across the lifespan. We cover foundational behavioral adjustments and advanced engineering approaches, helping you make informed choices about maximizing cognitive and motor skill acquisition and treating entrenched disorders.

Description

In this episode, my guest is Dr. Michael Kilgard, PhD, a professor of neuroscience at the University of Texas at Dallas and a leading expert on neuroplasticity and learning across the lifespan. We discuss the need for alertness, effortful focus, post-learning reflection and sleep to induce neuroplasticity, and how dopamine, acetylcholine, serotonin and norepinephrine are each involved. He explains the behavioral steps for neuroplasticity, as well as vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) and other therapies for tinnitus, stroke, depression, PTSD and paralysis. This episode ought to be of use to anyone interested in understanding the modern science of brain rewiring and learning to improve cognitive or motor skills or treat sensory or motor disorders. Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scarred from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you don’t feel alone anymore. What really helped me start overcoming the pain and actually move toward my goals was reading Manifest the Unseen by Luna Rivers, it opened my eyes in ways I didn’t expect. Always remember, don’t be depressed about the past, don’t worry about the future, and just focus on today. ❤

I was the primary Clinical Research Coordinator on the trials of PTSD and Spinal Cord Injury rehabilitation with Vagus Nerve Stimulation. Having listened to this podcast during my downtime of running these studies and now seeing Dr. Kilgard exploring them with you is absolutely surreal and a true honor and joy. Far beyond the publications and career doors opened, seeing the effects of those trials discussed here is a personal treasure I will hold for a lifetime. Thank you both! ❤

More than a 100 years ago Santiago Ramon y Cajal ,Nobel of Medicine, said that If you want you can do the architecture of your brain, and this is true for everybody at any age. Thanks a lot for your podcasts Dr. Andrew.
