I’ve had professional therapists try to teach me these breathing relaxation techniques to try to stop panic attacks before they happen. Even a specific way of breathing (I think from the diaphragm…or was it NOT from the diaphragm? lol. It’s been a while). In any case, I’ve always found it to be very difficult. My mind would wander just in those few seconds of inhaling, breath holding and exhaling. The thing that finally helped me was specific instructions to not only count the seconds but to VISUALIZE the actual numbers floating in front of me. That gave my mind something “visual” to focus on and it works! I’ve heard this is what they teach soldiers in training who have to remain calm. ❤
