I appreciate these conversations, but I keep coming back to the same issue—most strategies for stress and anxiety still operate within the framework of management, not resolution. For people with deep trauma, anxiety isn’t just ‘stress’ or ‘overthinking.’ It’s a full-body experience, a learned survival mechanism that doesn’t just disappear with logic and breathing techniques. You can’t think your way out of a physiological response that was hardwired through lived experience. We talk a lot about resilience, but what if the real issue is that we’re forced to be resilient to systems that keep us in survival mode? What if instead of focusing so much on coping, we focused on actually healing the root causes? This is why so many people feel like they’re doing everything ‘right’—meditating, using the tools, practicing mindfulness—but still feel stuck. Because no one is telling them that true healing isn’t just about what you do in the moment. It’s about rewiring the nervous system so the moment doesn’t feel like a threat in the first place. If we really want to help people break free from chronic anxiety, we need to stop treating the symptoms and start asking: Why is the nervous system stuck in a survival loop? What experiences taught it that safety wasn’t an option? And how do we unlearn that—not just mentally, but physically, emotionally, and on a deep subconscious level? Until that shift happens, anxiety will always be something we’re managing rather than something we’re actually healing.
I’m 54 now, and here are 3 things I wish I had learned earlier about healing from trauma: Ignoring it doesn’t make it go away. It just shows up in different ways. Your nervous system holds onto more than you realize. Healing isn’t just mental—it’s physical too. Mindfulness isn’t about thinking less, but about seeing your thoughts differently. I actually read a good book about it called Shift Your Mind by Alexander Brooks. It made me realize this in a way that finally made sense. Must-read if you have alot of anxiety.❤
Mel, I wake up so irritable due to perimenopause. I am typing this just from listening to the first 2 minutes. THANK YOU ❤. Dr Julie stating that these feelings are the normal human experience and that we need to stop judging ourselves. As simple as this sounds and the many times I have heard these words BUT today it CLICKED ❤ Oh wow, thank you. My ego spirals bc of my judgements of myself. Thank you to Dr Julie! ❤❤❤
I’ve been listening to you for a long time now and I just realized one of the things that keeps me coming back to your videos.. you’re the Mom model that I don’t have anymore. The way you give advice, straight up and honest, like it or not.. I miss this so much. Thank you.
Dr. Julie's priceless quote: "Get busy with life's purpose. Toss aside empty hopes. Get active in your own rescue, if you care for yourself at all, and do it while you can." Regarding the predator / prey comment... While I respect the limited use of this mindset to battle cancer, for example, I've seen (as I would guess Dr. Julie has) people for whom this is their mindset for life. Sadly, they seem to leave a path of destruction behind them and never really seem to live a full life. They seem to be stuck in that mindset, never recognizing that there's a "third option" in life. My comment... protect yourself as best you can from being someone else's prey. When you can't, follow Dr. Julie's quote, as best you can and don't turn into a predator yourself. In my observations of people & of life, the people who have followed this path (who I've known) have led solidly good lives.
Thank you for being alive in my lifetime. Never change. Blessings to you and yours.
When we face every situation by asking " What is this teaching me"?, there is always an answer and something better on the other side and is life changing.
My Mom waited, having cancer until it was too late. So please don't wait!!!
the mere fact that we are listening to this is a sign of progress
"Resentment is you not paying attention to your boundaries..." Thank you Mel...❤ Appreciate your hard work..✨
