Let Them. — This conversation will change the way you think about your past, your pain, and your purpose. Today, Mel sits down with singer-songwriter Mon Rovîa, whose breathtaking journey from war-torn Liberia, where he narrowly escaped becoming a child soldier, to the global stage will stop you in your tracks. But this isn’t just about his story—it’s about what his story will awaken in you. Adopted and raised in the U.S., Mon spent years trying to outrun his trauma. What followed was guilt, despair, and a deep feeling of not belonging anywhere. Until he realized he had a choice: He could stay stuck in suffering or turn his pain into power. In this episode, you’ll learn: How to stop running from your story and start making peace with it The truth about survivor’s guilt—and how to transform it into purpose How your gifts—yes, you have them—can heal you and others That no matter what you’ve been through, you belong here If you’ve ever felt like the odd one out, like you were handed a life you didn’t ask for, or like you’re carrying weight that’s not yours to hold, this one’s for you. Thank you so much for having me, Mel. Grateful for the space you created to have such a real and layered conversation. It meant a lot to speak openly, and I hope the words resonate with whoever needed to hear them. Honored to share this moment with you.

As a Liberian, am very, very proud of my bro and countryman, Mon Rovia. Thanks for hosting him and giving him/us the space and platform to share his story/our stories as a whole. As a victim of the Liberian civil wars, and worse of all being born and raised through those horrible times in our country history…it takes God or some spiritual power to help you heal, forgive and move on. It’s not an easy thing for the human spirit to endure. Mon Rovia articulated these emotional feelings and memories well. The rawness of his story brings tears and relief at the same time.🫂 ✌️ and ❤️ 🇱🇷 to the 🌎 !

As a mental health professional, I’ve worked with many adopted children and teens, especially those adopted from volatile environments and placed in families of different racial or cultural backgrounds. One common theme that arises is the assumption that once a child is brought into a "better" situation, they should feel healed, whole, or simply grateful. But adoption doesn’t erase grief, confusion, or loss. Many adoptees continue to carry questions like: Why was I saved and not my siblings? What happened to the family I left behind? How do I reconnect without feeling guilty? Even when their early environments were traumatic, adoptees may still long for connection with their roots. They may miss the parents they lost, the siblings they’ve never reunited with, or the culture they were disconnected from. These feelings are not signs of disloyalty, they are part of a healthy identity formation process. Cultural roots and family history, no matter how painful, shape who we are. Ignoring that past can create emotional distress and a sense of emptiness. Healing comes through integration, not erasure. This version of Mon Rovia is both awareness & healing, and I love this for him.

Im Mexican and was adopted into a white family. And like he said, I’m grateful but it has created such an identity crisis because I am not from there nor from here. I’ve felt my whole life like I’ve not belonged here nor anywhere.
