It seems America is about to have a long overdue conversation on obesity.
I have a theory. Policy removed micronutrients (eg., magnesium and zinc) from easily acquired foods (eg., fast foods) and replaced fermented foods with preservative foods. In addition to that life-style that lacks sunlight. Therefore, people are eternally living with low-grade inflammation and low energy (lacking in ATP). So they are eating more for energy, but our body can't produce energy from it efficiently, resulting in over eating.
Current policy equals large profits for big food. I dont think obesity rates are driven by lack of willpower but lack of knowledge, knowledge about what is in our food, and what you eat, which really matters to your overall health.
Discipline is more important than motivation. (Even little) Steps will-power you to your goal. A lazy study equals lazy results. Excellent video (info)
Modern food is designed for you to eat beyond your need/desire for calories. Food companies have to grow their sales and profits faster than our needs for their products.
Highly Processed "Food" is no longer food. It's an addictive substance that doesn't have much nutrition.
Shopping when you're hungry be like -Buy groceries- Buy the grocery store
Tom, if you really want to address this, here is the solution: Either you ban processed foods or (my preferred choice) you increase taxes a bit and you use those taxes to make whole foods FREE. Literally use the financial incentive mechanism to get people to eat healthier. This mechanism (in reverse) has slowly worked for reducing smoking rates over the last few generations. Financial incentive is as powerful or possibly even more so than the desire for better tasting unhealthy food.
I'm 66yo now. I was thin until my late 40s/early 50s and reading labels since my early 20s. I knew from watching women diet and diet and never succeed long term. I knew something was wrong with medical recommendations and stupid calorie counting. Glad to hear people talking about it now.
The best advice Thomas in this video is your statement "go grocery shopping when you're not hungry" to make good choices. If I have bad choices in my home, I will eat them for sure. No amount of "knowing its bad" willpower will save me.
