This is Worse than Sugar (Stores Belly Fat and Makes You Eat More)
Sensory Science: Hacking Texture, Sound, and Temperature to Control Appetite
Control food cravings by understanding how sound, texture, temperature, and smell hijack your reward system. Optimize satiety signals by integrating chewing and applying compounds like EGCG.
Short Summary
- Manipulate sensory inputs like crunch volume or temperature contrast to increase (or decrease) food satisfaction.
- Leverage non-caloric sensory hits (e.g., carbonation, intentional crunch) to potentially manage short-term appetite.
- Utilize compounds like EGCG from green tea to trigger satiety hormones (GLP-1) and manage ghrelin levels deliberately.
This discussion explores the powerful role sensory attributes play beyond basic macronutrients in driving addictive eating behavior and provides actionable ways to counteract negative effects or leverage positive ones for appetite management.

the sound of ice in a glass makes me want a Scotch
I drink more than one can of seltzer water everyday. It's the only thing that quenches my thirst. It also helps me avoid other surgery carbonated beverages.
Junk food is very thoroughly engineered. Those foods usually stack several addictive traits: sweet, salty, sour, savory (umami), spicy, fatty (the good kind, like in butter), crunchiness, etc.
Awesome content, as always!! Thank you, Thomas! 👏
Make a cheddar cheese crisp to go with your scrambled eggs...
I had no idea that why I prefer carbonate water vs regular water.
Watching this and drinking a La Croix 😂 I get it though
To the ice cream, I've heard this before, cold makes things taste less (sweet), So ice cream has to have a ton of sugar in it, we dont notice. But, let that ice cream melt, and the slury left over is sometimes too sweet to eat. The reverse can be true with hot foods. Hot apple pies tastes sweeter than room temp. So microwave it for a sec, and use less sugar.
Celery and Lebanese cucumber has that crunch. Cider vinegar with salt, tabasco and water is a dopamine hit for me, and so is soda water with lime, or dandelion and chicory coffee with allulose. Or lemon water with ginger juice. Or green tea, or peppermint tea. Another one is a teaspoon of spirulina in water, or a teaspoon of ocean algae calcium in water.
For years I thought being overweight was just who I was, like my destiny was to never feel good about my body. Diets felt like punishment, and every failure confirmed the story in my head: “you’re not built for this.” I was scrolling youtube at 2AM when someone in a comment mentioned Mastery Collection by Landon Sorel. I ordered it immediately, and it honestly hit me harder than any trainer or program ever did. It forced me to see where I was lying to myself. It’s not comfortable, it’s not meant to be but it works so good. If you’re sick of starting over, this is the wake-up call you’ve been waiting for.
