The biggest problem is it's entirely based on self reporting. This debate will never be over. That being said, common sense dictates the balance and quality is always the answer.

That's absolutely correct, it depends on the composition of the diet, you could have a healthy low fat or healthy low carb diet. Also, a major problem with studies about increased heart attacks back in the 1940's was they did not address that many people were smoking two or three packs of cigarettes a day at the time.

One interesting aspect of trying to eat low glycemic index foods is that adding fat to carbohydrates such as butter in mashed potatoes actually lowers the glycemic index of the food.

I think the sweet spot is somewhere between a moderate fat and a low carb diet. This coupled with intermittent fasting and regular exercise could give the best results.

Ancel Keys purposely left out the country of France in his study as the population has a high fat diet. There are no essential carbs for the human diet, only essential fats and protein.
