Order your copy of The Let Them Theory πŸ‘‰ https://melrob.co/let-them-theory πŸ‘ˆ The #1 Best Selling Book of 2025 πŸ”₯ Discover how much power you truly have. It all begins with two simple words. Let Them. β€” According to decades of research, having friendships and making connections is not optional. It’s essential for your physical health. Your friendships are actually part of your immune system. In this episode of The Mel Robbins Podcast, Kasley Killam, Harvard-trained friendship expert and researcher on social connection explains why staying connected is one of the most important (and underrated) pillars of health. Kasley explains how loneliness triggers stress and inflammation and how supportive relationships do the opposite. They calm your system and protect your health. In one study, people who felt more supported and who received more hugs were less likely to get sick after being exposed to a cold virus. And if they did happen to get sick, their symptoms were milder. This conversation raises the stakes on friendship and will prove to you why social health is the missing key to living a longer, healthier, and happier life. I wanna be a friend, a reliable one. The kind that shows up. I wanna have friends again, too.

Moving to a retirement home before I actually retired, made such a beneficial difference on many levels. And, I am around people all the time, both residents and staff. I can tell how the connections have improved my mental and physical health, without a doubt.

How are we supposed to get this when you have no support?

Very important: I'm a social person. I've always lived in the city and had lots of friends, while also struggling with my health. But 3 years ago, I moved away from the city, surrounded by nature (which I love). However, my health went down, I can only see my friends once a year, and I have recently been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. My psychology says I need friends to improve my immune system.

I'm an introvert. I have social connections with family and a few friends. I don't see friends often. Am hardly ever sick

Asperger’s - To be honest, the times when I’m forced/obligated to have any sort of social connection it’s genuinely spiralled to depression (twice suicidal), severe health issues physical and mental (cortisol, hair loss, weight gain) But when I’m alone (living, work) I am at my best health and wellness. I am free to pursue a reality where I feel happy, whereas humans try and offload negativity or bring others down whether they realise it or not
