I've done 20/4 intermittent fast for the last 5 months. It has changed my life. I have more energy, my mind is clearer and I experience absolutely no depression. I am optimistic and feel better than I have felt in years and am very close to the body weight I had when I was in high school. I am 76 years of age.
All I know is intermittent fasting is literally the best thing I've ever done for my health.
Intermittent fasting helps me not feel hungry. If I can go 12 hours or more without eating the the hunger stops. My stomach literately stops growling for food. If I eat more but smaller meals I am always hungry.
The thing is.. for me, it is so so much easier to maintain a calorie deficit with intermittent fasting. Trying to maintain a calorie deficit with normal meals throughout the day always causes me stress and I can't handle it
My eating window is 4 hours per day. Yes, I do consume less calories so this helps keep my weight down, but the benefit for me is that it keeps me from mindlessly eating when I'm not really hungry. I will stay the course.
Tried a few windows and found 12-14 hrs fasting works well. With 16, I lost muscle mass but learnt easy discipline. With 14 hrs fasting I gained muscle. IF gets you comfy with hunger, it helps you stop snacking, which helps with blood sugar.
there are so many studies about everything that we can choose the study we want to match our ideas.
Admitting that you were wrong and changing your practices when new data becomes available isn't flip-flopping. It's being an intelligent, thoughtful person.

Almost every comment here (if not every comment) is a testament to how IF has transformed the health of the commenter. My own experience is the same. Dropped 70 lbs, no more pre-diabetes, or high blood pressure or high cholesterol . My doctor lectures me about the pitfalls of IF and low carb but then says he's never seen an HDL as good as mine.
