Optimizing Insulin Response and Longevity Using Molasses

Discover how strategic consumption of molasses, unlike refined sugar, can improve insulin sensitivity and offer surprising antioxidant benefits. Learn the precise dosage and timing to leverage its unique metabolic effects.

Short Summary

  • Molasses reduces the required insulin response to carbohydrate meals, especially beneficial for mitigating insulin resistance.
  • Blackstrap molasses provides significant antioxidant capacity, actively protecting cellular DNA from oxidative stress.
  • Dose matters: Use 0.5 to 1 tablespoon specifically with starchy meals (like lunch) to block carb absorption, avoiding use with pure sugar loads.

This guide details scientific findings demonstrating why molasses is metabolically superior to refined sugar, focusing on its role in glucose handling, pancreatic function, and long-term health via antioxidant action.

My Appalachian dad who died at nearly 102 in 2016 used to love bitter black country molasses. He mashed it up with butter and ate it on homemade biscuits. That was “good eatin’ “and made him happy. I think that parts counts towards health too.

I predict in five years we will learn that the healthiest meals are what our great grandparents ate: meat, organ meats, vegetables cooked to death, sourdough, coffee and molasses!!! 😂 Also, regarding maple syrup... when I use most grocery store maple syrups, even organic, I have a sugar spike. However, when I use the very light Vermont maple syrup (it's expensive!) I have NO spike. What? It makes me wonder if some maple syrups are being cut with other sweeteners?

My dad was an engineer in a sugar mill. He would always bring home large jars of black molasses. We were dosed with one tablespoon every morning. Dad had a rhuematic heart and wasn't expected to live past 40. He lived until 82, when he was tragically killed in hospital with an overdose of warfarin. He wanted to live to 100 and I'm sure he would have, if not for hospital negligence. As kids, our favourite part of the mill was that black molasses tap! Wishing everyone the best of health. 🙏💙

1. Molasses (especially dark/blackstrap) improves insulin resistance and reduces insulin need. 2. Helps pancreatic beta cells function and slows glucose absorption. 3. Acts as a natural carb blocker and slows gastric emptying. 4. Best taken ½–1 tbsp with starchy meals (lunch or breakfast). 5. High in antioxidants, protects liver DNA, and reduces oxidative stress. Thanks to the creator for sharing these insights.

I’m Nordic (combo of Swedish, Norwegian, Danish) and my grandmothers never used white sugar in anything. It was always the darkest molasses. I grew up loving the flavor. My one grandma makes ginger spice cookies with lots of dark molasses and all the delicious spices. I love & make them regularly myself! We were taught that if you feel tired & look pale you need iron! More molasses and beef/calf liver immediately!! ☺️🙏

I read a comment somewhere that stated: Bitter on your tongue, sweet for your belly. Sweet on your tongue, bitter for your belly. Meaning that things like white sugar doesn't help your gut flora. Molasses is somewhat bitter, so helps your gut flora.
