I gained more muscle mass and lost fat while eating more calories. The culprit was my hormones were out of whach
Wood and gasoline are both fuel but wood chips in my car gas tank will yield a useless machine
It makes sense, everyone has different mitochondrial expression and metabolic agents in their body.
Robert Lustig talked about some young obese patients with metabolic disorders he treated in his early career. He brought them into a hospital controlled setting and fed them 500 calories daily. They still gained weight. Once he addressed their hormonal disorder, they were able to lose weight. The body needs to function properly first.
"Eating low calorie foods leads to weight gain. Eating high calorie food leads to weight loss." Dr Norwitz said something like that, but I thought it was profound. Of course, it was not high calorie sweets but instead it was macadamia nuts. Always great to hear Dr Nick talk about metabolism etc.
I really appreciate what this doctor had to say. Great interview. Thank you for acknowledging how patients or just people struggling with lifelong weight problems feel.
Thankyou! I’ve been trying to explain for years, we are not furnace. We don’t just burn calories. Weight gain/loss is so much more complicated than that.
Not all of Thomas' guests are created equal. Nick is one of the very best IMO.
The first time I was able to finally get lean in my life I did it by greatly increasing my calories, protein and fat intake. I've shared that in a number of forums over the years and people always tell me I'm lying or even dissociating. 🤣 Even a keto forum, where I thought people knew better. But the science now is all bearing this out. I was probably unusual in that I under-ate calories and protein and over-exercised for many years, and that was one of the reason I could not get rid of a puffy layer of fat everywhere. I had cortisol fat, visceral fat, severe pcos and hypothyroid. I made the switch over 20 years ago, I had never heard of keto at that point. I was just early in a career of sitting at a desk all day and realized that if I ate homemade oatmeal for breakfast I felt terrible, foggy and exhausted all day and if I ate eggs I felt fine. So I cut out all carbs, just like that. I never ate junk or processed food, so I replaced homemade oatmeal, rice, potatoes, beans and tortillas with as much meat, sausage, fat and butter as I could ever want. I went from starving myself all the time to eating to satiety, all on meat, cheese and fat. So there's no question my caloric intake went up. When I went to a restaurant, I'd skip the bread before dinner and just eat butter - way before I knew of anyone doing that! And finally, in my late 20s, I was able to get the physique I'd always wanted. I went from a size 8 with love handles to a lean size 2-4. I was exercising a ton, but my exercise didn't change.
Thanks T.DL for another great video! Always like to hear from Nick!
