Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice answer fan questions on cosmic inflation, quantum fluctuations, and the earliest moments after the Big Bang with cosmologist Brian Keating. We unpack the biggest mysteries in cosmology: What happened before the Big Bang? How do quantum fluctuations shape the universe? Can we ever truly measure the signature of inflation? Brian shares the exhilarating and humbling story of the BICEP2 experiment and how he had to retract the results from a groundbreaking attempt to detect gravitational waves from the early universe. We explore how light polarization reveals hidden information about spacetime, why searching for deviations a billionth of a degree above absolute zero matters, and why multi-wavelength observations are critical to separating cosmic signals from noise. We take on listener questions: Could the Higgs field vary across space and time? What’s on the other side of the cosmic microwave background? How do quantum fluctuations lead to galaxy formation? Could we detect new particles we aren't even looking for? And, will the cosmic microwave background eventually fade into radio waves as the universe expands? Along the way, we tackle the need for inflation theory, the possibility of a multiverse, and how studying the universe’s origins isn’t just about history, it’s about understanding our very existence. I love to watch Chuck Nice being mindblown. Because if he understand it I can understand. Often I get Neil's points and concept only after chuck is mindblown and explains in his words. We love Chuck.

I love Star Talk. I live in the Bible belt and have literally no one around me that is interested in discussing deep scientific topics. StarTalk makes me feel seen and far less alone.

If the laws of physics were a little different somewhere else in the universe, what everyday thing do you think might work totally differently: gravity, time, light, or something else?

Just wanted to say a big 'thank you' I'm 75 and a v 'ordinary' person..came across yr podcasts a while ago and find them fascinating and fun to listen to and have even at my end of life become enthralled with yr topics of discussion and love the fact tĥat you explain complex ideas about science and physics, the universe etc etc in a way that èven my uneducated ordinary and underused brain has begun to want to know more about. Even though i know little of yr terminology or indeed science " language " I shall keep following and hope to enjoy many more..my 6yr old grandson wants to be a scientist, not sure "what sort yet nanny " lol but i shall look forward to engaging in conversation and watching yr podcasts with him..should be fun..thanks again x

Gary's ad reading is like pure ASMR. Them tying directly into the show is cool too. This is how to do ads.

The Bicep 2 story is a great reminder that science is often about embracing mistakes and refining methods. Keating's perspective on cosmic dust truly highlights the importance of skepticism in research.

"Before my own personal Big bang" and Neil glances at his notes, hiding a grin, while Chuck bursts into laughter 😂😂😂 and he continues his speech about the universe.
