So it’s a variation on the “it turns out I wasn’t allergic to everything - I was allergic to the metal in the needles they used to test what I was allergic to” story.
Press never feels the need to correct itself
the "credit card" amount of plastic consumption every week always seemed way too much for me, even a child that chew on plastic couldn't consume this much.
And people always look at me like I'm crazy when I'm skeptical of medical studies that don't seem to add up, glad there are still lots of researches out there devoted to good science.
It's a good example of why people that do research should be trying very hard to prove themselves wrong.
I am at least 45% plastic at this point. I hope a robot doesn't get the wrong idea.
The fact that an entire field of study was upended by an obscure interaction no one had any reason to expect, reminds me of a famous phrase that goes something like: "You should be afraid of what you don't know. But you should be terrified of what you don't know that you don't know".
She didn’t stumble on this. She used her reasoning skills based on what she saw to search for an explanation. That’s not stumbling on to something.

This feels similar to how people use lead paint tests on things that aren't paint and claim lead is in things it definitely isn't. The test isn't measuring lead atoms, it is measuring a characteristic of lead. That characteristic is not unique to lead. Similarly, microplastic measurement seems to be measuring characteristics of microplastics, but those characteristics are not unique to microplastics so people misattribute non-microplastics as microplastics because the non-microplastic shares characteristics with the microplastics.
